Tool 1.14 Capability review process for the next generation

Tool 1.14 Capability review process for the next generation

The content in tool 1.14 is adapted from Pinion Advisory templates.

The purpose of this process is to review the skills, knowledge and capability of the next generation looking to step up their management skills. If developed with a supportive mentor (parent, employer or manager), then this process will define the actions needed to boost the next generation’s management ability and ensure a smooth transition between generations.

Score each item out of five; with five as the highest and one the lowest. Identify where they need to be in one-, three- and five-years’ time. There are seven sections:

  1. Operations/enterprise
  2. Financial
  3. Business management
  4. People management
  5. Compliance
  6. Environment
  7. Personal attributes and people skills

A few examples have been provided in the template below, and you can download a copy so you can add items relevant to your business.

Use this review to develop an agreed action plan. Consider the mentoring or training that you will undertake.

Review this annually to celebrate success and improvement and develop a new or revised action plan.
