Making More From Sheep is a best practice package of management information and tools for Australian sheep producers, developed by AWI and MLA.

The Making More From Sheep (MMFS) Manual is designed to help sheep producers increase the productivity and profitability of their enterprises and the personal satisfaction of operating a successful farming business. It doesn’t matter where you start as there's information in the modules which fits right across the sheep production enterprise. Browse individual Modules below.

Module 1 Plan for Success

Establish business objectives and plans, as well as calculating your cost of production per kilogram of meat or wool to compare your business performance against industry benchmarks. Quantify risks, assess enterprise changes and new technologies.

Module 2 Market Focused Wool Production

Know the features of your wool influencing demand and price, and use a customer focus to produce, harvest and prepare wool for sale to maximise returns from your wool sales.

Module 3 Market Focused Lamb and Sheepmeat Production

Decide what product you can produce most profitably and the most profitable selling method, manage the production system to meet market specifications and respond to short- and long-term price and market signals.

Module 4 Capable and Confident Producers

Know who does what in the business and build knowledge and skills in those people, develop a sound business purpose and more effective communication, and maintain a happy balance between work and family time.

Module 5 Protect Your Farm's Natural Assets

Plan the vision for your business and grazing enterprise and an inventory of your farm’s natural assets to achieve your vision. Devise and implement your action plan, then measure, manage and monitor your progress towards the vision for your grazing enterprise.

Module 6 Healthy Soils

Manage according to soil capability, test soils for indicators of soil health and implement solutions for problem soils. Maintain groundcover to protect your soil and keep the soil bugs healthy.

Module 7 Grow More Pasture

Build and maintain soil fertility, graze to keep desirable species productive and dominant and establish new pastures.

Module 8 Turn Pasture into Product

Know your feed supply, know your animal demand, and match feed supply to animal demand to minimise risk.
Sheep Production & Management

Module 9 Boost Business with Breeding

Profitable sheep are fit for purpose. Use breeding tools to help make business decisions driven by objectives. Informed classing, selection and joining decisions are critical and monitoring and reviewing enables continual improvement.

Module 10 Wean More Lambs

Ensure most ewes get in-lamb then manage your ewes to improve lamb survival and keep maximum numbers of lambs alive to weaning. Manage weaners for lifetime productivity and prepare your ewes for next joining.

Module 11 Healthy and Contented Sheep

Meet all animal wellbeing requirements and maintain your sheep in appropriate body condition. Adopt on-farm biosecurity measures and implement a preventative health management program, then manage sporadic outbreaks of diseases.

Module 12 Efficient Pastoral Production

Know your property and establish a vision. Determine a grazing management approach which matches grazing pressure to feed supply, managing pest animal species and obtaining best production from rainfall received.
